Martial Arts

People who know me well know that I have had a practical interest in martial arts for many years. Many do not know that, for me, part of the challenge of Martial Arts revolves around overcoming a lack of natural physical coordination by the mental discipline involved.

In the past, I have studied variously martial arts, but recently, I was learning Tae Kwon Do. It is a Korean style, related to kick boxing and karate.

The tenets of Tae Kwon Do, are involved with attitude, rather than power, and I try to live up to them. They are:

  • Courtesy

Always be polite to others.

  • Integrity

Always be honest with yourself, and know what is right and wrong.

  • Perseverance

Never stop trying to achieve a goal.

  • Self-control

Never lose your temper. live, work and train within your capabilities.

  • Indomitable Spirit

Show courage and stick to your principles, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Just in case you're wondering, I can and did break boards as part of my training, but board breaking is an exercise in control.
